Explore Europe’s last Wilderness!
In February 2027, this Swedish Lapland Photography Tour takes you deep into one of Europe’s most breathtaking winter landscapes: from the frozen canyon and waterfalls of Abisko National Park to the epic icefields and mountain scenery of Stora Sjöfallet.
This is the Arctic at its most powerful.
Snow-covered forests. Frozen rivers. Vast mountain valleys. Blue twilight. Silent winter roads. And, if the sky opens for us, the Northern Lights dancing above the landscape.
Swedish Lapland is often called Europe’s last Wilderness - and during this photography tour, you’ll experience exactly why. We’ll travel from Kiruna to Abisko and further into the wild heart of Laponia, the UNESCO World Heritage Area where dramatic nature, Sámi culture and Arctic silence come together in a truly unforgettable way.
This journey is designed for photographers who want more than a standard winter trip.
We’ll explore some of the most photogenic places in northern Sweden, chase the best available light, adapt to the weather and create images of frozen waterfalls, Arctic mountains, icy details, snow-covered forests and hopefully the magical Northern Lights.
You don’t need to plan the route, find the locations or figure out how to photograph in these conditions on your own.
I’ll guide you through the landscapes, help you with your photography and make sure we focus on what matters most: being in the right places, at the right time, with your camera ready.
This is Swedish Lapland in winter.
Wild. Silent. Remote. And incredibly beautiful.
Disclaimer: Even if there are very good chances to get certain winter conditions and to experience the Northern Lights at the locations we are visiting, I cannot guarantee neither one nor the other. What you can be certain about is that I will do my very best to provide you an amazing experience even if we face difficult conditions!
Who this tour is for
This tour is for you if you love wild winter landscapes, photography and meaningful travel experiences.
You don’t need to be a professional photographer. You only need to be curious, open to learning and comfortable spending time outdoors in winter conditions.
This tour is perfect for you if you want to:
Improve your landscape photography in Arctic winter conditions
Learn how to photograph snow, ice, mountains and Northern Lights
Travel with a small group instead of a large tourist tour
Discover some of the most beautiful winter locations in Swedish Lapland
Get personal guidance in the field
Come home with images that feel atmospheric, thoughtful and full of story
Experience the silence, beauty and raw nature of the far north
Whether you are a beginner with a passion for landscapes or an experienced photographer looking for new inspiration, this tour is designed to help you grow creatively while experiencing one of the most beautiful winter regions in Scandinavia.
What you will learn
This tour is not only about visiting beautiful locations. It is also about becoming a more confident and intentional photographer. During the tour, we’ll work on:
Winter Landscape Photography - learn how to use the soft Arctic light and how to create clean, powerful compositions in winter landscapes
Northern Lights Photography - learn how to prepare properly, work efficiently in the cold and create magical photos of Northern Lights
Composition & Storytelling - use foregrounds, natural lines, balance, atmosphere and visual storytelling to create photographs that feel more intentional and personal
Working in Arctic Conditions - learn how to protect your gear, keep batteries working, avoid common winter mistakes and stay comfortable enough to focus on your photography
Editing & Image Review - learn how to bring your images to life in the editing process
Itinerary:
The itinerary below gives you an idea of the route and experience, but it may change depending on weather, road conditions, light and aurora activity. Our days will generally revolve around sunrise and sunset, when the light is at its most beautiful. During the day we will review images, discuss compositions and work on editing techniques together.
Day 1 - Arrival day
We’ll meet in Kiruna, the starting point of our winter adventure in Swedish Lapland.
After everyone has arrived, we’ll gather for an introduction, go through the plan for the week and talk about what to expect when photographing in Arctic winter conditions.
Depending on arrival times and weather, we may head out for a first sunset shoot or explore Kiruna itself - a fascinating mining city that is currently undergoing one of the most unique city transformations in Europe.
In the evening, we’ll enjoy dinner together and if conditions allow, we may already head out for our first Northern Lights attempt.
Day 2 - Learn about the Sámi culture and visit the famous Ice Hotel
After breakfast, we’ll visit the famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, one of the most iconic winter attractions in Swedish Lapland. This is a beautiful opportunity to photograph ice art, textures, details and the unique atmosphere of a place built from ice.
We’ll also visit a Sámi museum Nutti Sámi Siida to learn more about the culture, traditions and history of the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia.
After lunch, we’ll continue our journey towards Abisko. The road to Abisko is incredibly scenic, with snowy forests, frozen lakes and mountain views opening up along the way. We’ll stop whenever the conditions and light offer good photographic opportunities.
After arriving in Abisko, we’ll check in and prepare for the evening. If the skies are clear, we’ll head out to photograph the Northern Lights.
Days 3-5 - Exploring the wilderness of Abisko
We’ll spend two full days exploring the dramatic winter landscapes around Abisko National Park - for me one of the most beautiful areas in Sweden for photography.
Depending on weather and light, we’ll photograph the stunning canyon Abiskojåkka, mountain views, snowy forests, frozen waterfalls and other beautiful winter locations in the surrounding area. These days are intentionally flexible, giving us time to return to locations in better conditions, scout compositions for night photography and adapt to the weather.
One of the highlights will be a snowmobile tour into the mountains, giving us the chance to experience the Arctic landscape from a completely different perspective and reach areas that would be difficult to access otherwise. This can create beautiful opportunities for photographing wide mountain views, snowy valleys and the feeling of true winter adventure.
There will also be the possibility to book an optional dogsledding tour for those who want to add another classic Arctic experience to the journey.
In the evenings, we’ll keep an eye on the aurora forecast and head out to photograph the Northern Lights if conditions allow.
Day 5 - Journey towards Stora Sjöfallet and snowshoe hike
After breakfast, we leave Abisko and begin the journey towards Stora Sjöfallet National Park.
The drive takes approximately four hours, but we’ll treat the journey as part of the photography experience. The landscape changes along the way, offering new views, quieter roads and a deeper sense of wilderness.
On the way, we’ll stop for a snowshoe hike through a snow-covered forest.
This will be a beautiful opportunity to experience the Arctic landscape in a slower and more intimate way. Snowshoeing allows us to reach scenes that are not always accessible from the road - quiet forest details, untouched snow, abstract patterns and peaceful winter atmosphere.
After arriving near Stora Sjöfallet, we’ll settle in and prepare for the evening. If the conditions are right, we’ll head out for another chance to photograph the Northern Lights.
Day 6-7 - Exploring Stora Sjöfallet National Park
We’ll spend two full days in the wilder and more remote landscapes around Stora Sjöfallet National Park.
This area offers a beautiful mix of icefields, frozen waterfalls, open mountain views and quiet Arctic scenery. Compared to Abisko, the landscape here feels even more raw and untouched, making it perfect for working with scale, simplicity and atmosphere.
The exact locations will depend on weather, road conditions and light, but the goal is to explore the best winter scenes the area has to offer. In the evenings, we’ll either review images, rest or head out again for Northern Lights photography if the sky is clear.
Day 6 - Departure day
After breakfast, we begin the journey back to Kiruna.
Depending on our energy and conditions, we might head out for a final sunrise shoot.
The tour ends in Kiruna, where we say goodbye after eight days of Arctic landscapes, winter photography, shared experiences and hopefully many beautiful images.
You’ll leave Swedish Lapland not only with photographs, but with a deeper understanding of winter light, Northern Lights photography and the quiet beauty of the far north.
Meet your guide!
Hej there! I’m Julien.
I am a professional landscape photographer based in Sweden and I have spent the past years exploring many of Scandinavia’s most beautiful places with my camera. Photography has taken me to incredible locations - but what I enjoy just as much is sharing this passion with others.
During my photo tours and workshops, I love helping photographers improve their skills, discover new perspectives and create images that truly tell a story. Over the past years I have guided hundreds of aspiring photographers on workshops and photo walks across Scandinavia. It is always such a pleasure to see participants grow creatively and return home with images they are proud of.
I would be very happy to guide you to the most scenic places in Swedish Lapland!
