In February 2027, this Swedish Lapland Photography Tour takes you deep into one of the most iconic winter landscapes in northern Sweden - a place of frozen waterfalls, dramatic canyon views, snow-covered forests, Arctic mountains and some of the best opportunities to witness the Northern Lights.

This 6 Day Photography Tour is designed to slow down and fully experience Abisko, Europe’s oldest national parks and one of the most stunning winter destinations in Scandinavia!

We’ll spend several days exploring the national park and its surroundings, giving us more time to follow the light, adapt to the weather and return to locations when the conditions are at their best. From the frozen canyon and icy details of Abisko National Park to wide mountain views and quiet winter forests, every day offers new opportunities to create atmospheric images of the Arctic north.

And when darkness falls, we’ll keep our eyes on the sky.

Abisko is famous for its Northern Lights opportunities, and by staying in the area for several nights, we give ourselves more flexibility to react to clear skies and aurora activity. Photographing the aurora can never be guaranteed - but being in the right place, with enough time and your camera ready, gives us the best possible chance.

This tour combines winter landscape photography with classic Arctic experiences. We’ll explore the famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, learn more about Sámi culture, enjoy a traditional Sámi lunch, head into the mountains on an exciting Snowmobile Tour and give you the chance to add an optional dogsledding experience.

And after long winter days outside, you’ll return to your own private room.

What you will learn

This tour is not only about visiting beautiful locations. It is also about becoming a more confident and intentional photographer. During the tour, we’ll work on:

  • Winter Landscape Photography - learn how to use the soft Arctic light and how to create clean, powerful compositions in winter landscapes

  • Northern Lights Photography - learn how to prepare properly, work efficiently in the cold and create magical photos of Northern Lights

  • Composition & Storytelling - use foregrounds, natural lines, balance, atmosphere and visual storytelling to create photographs that feel more intentional and personal

  • Working in Arctic Conditions - learn how to protect your gear, keep batteries working, avoid common winter mistakes and stay comfortable enough to focus on your photography

  • Editing & Image Review - learn how to bring your images to life in the editing process

Itinerary:

The itinerary below gives you an idea of the route and experience, but it may change depending on weather, road conditions, light and aurora activity. Our days will generally revolve around sunrise and sunset, when the light is at its most beautiful. During the day we will review images, discuss compositions and work on editing techniques together.

Day 1 - Arrival day

We’ll meet in Kiruna, the starting point of our winter adventure in Swedish Lapland.

After everyone has arrived, we’ll gather for an introduction, go through the plan for the week and talk about what to expect when photographing in Arctic winter conditions.

Depending on arrival times and weather, we may head out for a first sunset shoot or explore Kiruna itself - a fascinating mining city that is currently undergoing one of the most unique city transformations in Europe.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy dinner together and if conditions allow, we may already head out for our first Northern Lights attempt.

Day 2 - Learn about the Sámi culture and visit the famous Ice Hotel

After breakfast, we’ll visit the famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, one of the most iconic winter attractions in Swedish Lapland. This is a beautiful opportunity to photograph ice art, textures, details and the unique atmosphere of a place built from ice.

We’ll also visit a Sámi museum Nutti Sámi Siida to learn more about the culture, traditions and history of the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia.

After lunch, we’ll continue our journey towards Abisko. The road to Abisko is incredibly scenic, with snowy forests, frozen lakes and mountain views opening up along the way. We’ll stop whenever the conditions and light offer good photographic opportunities.

After arriving in Abisko, we’ll check in and prepare for the evening. If the skies are clear, we’ll head out to photograph the Northern Lights.

Days 3-5 - Exploring the wilderness of Abisko

Over the next three days, we’ll explore the dramatic winter landscapes of Abisko National Park and its surroundings - for me one of the most beautiful areas in Sweden for photography.

During these days, we’ll photograph some of Abisko’s most beautiful winter highlights, including the iconic u-shaped valley Lapporten, the frozen shores of Lake Torneträsk, the icy waterfall of Silverfallet and the dramatic canyon of Abiskojåkka. These locations offer a wonderful mix of wide Arctic views, frozen details, snow-covered forests and mountain scenery - perfect for working on composition, atmosphere and visual storytelling.

One of the adventure highlights of the tour will be an exciting Snowmobile Tour into the surrounding mountains and snow-covered forests. This gives us the chance to experience the Arctic landscape from a completely different perspective and reach areas that would be difficult to access otherwise. Along the way, we’ll look for opportunities to photograph open mountain views, winter forests and the feeling of true northern adventure.

We’ll also visit the Aurora Sky Station, where we can enjoy fantastic views over the surrounding landscape. From up here, the scale of Abisko becomes even more impressive - with mountains, valleys, frozen lake views and endless Arctic scenery opening up around us.

For guests who want to add another classic winter experience, there will also be the chance to book an optional Dogsledding Tour. This is a beautiful way to experience the silence and speed of the Arctic winter, while adding another memorable moment to your journey in Swedish Lapland.

And, of course, the nights will be dominated by hunting the Northern Lights.

Each evening, we’ll keep an eye on the weather, cloud cover and aurora forecast. If conditions look promising, we’ll head out with our cameras and tripods to photograph the aurora above the winter landscape. The Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, but spending several nights in Abisko gives us a strong chance to experience this magical phenomenon.

Day 6 - Departure day

After breakfast, we begin the journey back to Kiruna.

Depending on our energy and conditions, we might head out for a final sunrise shoot.

The tour ends in Kiruna, where we say goodbye after eight days of Arctic landscapes, winter photography, shared experiences and hopefully many beautiful images.

You’ll leave Swedish Lapland not only with photographs, but with a deeper understanding of winter light, Northern Lights photography and the quiet beauty of the far north.

Hej there! I’m Julien.

I am a professional landscape photographer based in Sweden and I have spent the past years exploring many of Scandinavia’s most beautiful places with my camera. Photography has taken me to incredible locations - but what I enjoy just as much is sharing this passion with others.

During my photo tours and workshops, I love helping photographers improve their skills, discover new perspectives and create images that truly tell a story. Over the past years I have guided hundreds of aspiring photographers on workshops and photo walks across Scandinavia. It is always such a pleasure to see participants grow creatively and return home with images they are proud of.

More than just a photo tour…

Good to know:

  • Meet up on Friday, February 26, 2027 at around 16.00 at our first hotel in Kiruna (Scandic). Possible pick-up from the airport or train station in Kiruna.

  • Arrival back in Kiruna on Wednesday, March 3, 2027 at around 13.00

  • This tour will be performed in English language, but I also speak German and a little Swedish

  • Transport in comfortable minibus

  • Accommodation in charming hotels close to the photo spots

  • Private room for every participant (no supplement)

  • Small group limited to just 6 people with lots of time for individual photographic guidance

What to bring?

Licenses

  • It is important that you will bring your driver’s license to be able to drive snowmobile (regular license for a car is enough)

Photography Gear

  • Your camera with spare batteries and SD memory cards

  • Camera lens(es):

    • preferably mid-range zoom lens in the 24-70mm range

    • wide-angle in the 15-20mm range for Northern Lights

    • optionally telezoom lens for wildlife or distant subjects

  • Sturdy tripod

  • Lens filters, if you have them (but not necessary)

  • Laptop or tablet with editing software if you want to edit your photos during the trip

Recommended Clothing

  • A variety base and mid layers (preferably merino wool and/or wool)

  • Warm winter jacket

  • Winter trousers or shell pants

  • Waterproof and insulated winter boots

  • Warm winter gloves (thin liner glovers in addition)

  • We welcome all experience levels, going from beginners to experienced photographers. A good mix of experience levels means we can also learn from each other. It is important that you bring your own camera & tripod, so you can get the most out of this trip!

  • Please note that we will do some shorter hikes on this trip. The hikes will neither be long nor steep. However, it is important that all participants take care of themselves, especially when we shoot on ice. The stones can be very slippery. If any location is out of your comfort zone, you’re more than welcome to shoot another location, stay at the hotel and rest, or wait until we get to another more comfortable location for you.

  • Yes, you can bring your drone, but there are important regulations to follow. Before flying your drone, you must have registered it and have a valid Operator ID (an operator ID issued in an EU member state is valid in any EU member state).

    Additionally, drones weighing over 250 grams must comply with stricter rules, including maintaining a safe distance from people and avoiding flights over crowds. Ensure you have appropriate insurance and are confident in flying responsibly.

    For more detailed information about drone regulations and best practices in Sweden, visit the information issued by Transportstyrelsen.

  • Our accommodations will be hotels close to the photo spots.

    The standard rooms are twin rooms with separate beds, but you can book your own private room at a surcharge (select this option in the booking process).

  • In order to reserve your spot, a deposit of 15% of the total price is required. The rest of the payment is due 30 days prior to the tour.

    Please be aware that all optional items need to be paid in full when booking.

  • You can get to Kiruna either by airplane or train (e.g. night train from Stockholm).

    There are flight connections from Stockholm to Kiruna several times a day.

  • Yes, transport in a comfortable minibus (or car) is included during the entire photo tour.

  • 60+ days before the tour: You will receive a full refund.

    Less than 60 days but more 30 days before the tour: Deposit cannot be refunded. Options will be fully refunded.

    Less than 30 days before the tour: Refunds are only possible if I am able to fill your spot with another participant. If the seat is successfully replaced, you will receive a the tour amount minus the deposit. If the seat cannot be replaced, unfortunately no refund can be given.

  • The combination of travel services offered to you is a package within the meaning of Directive (EU) 2015/2302.

    Therefore, you will benefit from all EU rights applying to packages. Company JP Photo will be fully responsible for the proper performance of the package as a whole.

    Additionally, as required by law, JP Photo has protection in place to refund your payments and, where transport is included in the package, to ensure your repatriation in the event that it becomes insolvent.

Important Information

Your safety and comfort during the tour are very important. While every effort is made to plan safe and enjoyable photography locations, participants are responsible for their own actions and decisions while travelling and photographing during the tour.

Participants should always assess their own physical abilities and avoid situations that may feel unsafe. Julien Pröpper’s role during the tour is to provide photography guidance and lead the group to carefully selected locations.

In the unlikely event that Julien Pröpper becomes ill or otherwise unable to lead the tour, a qualified replacement guide may be arranged. If this is not possible, the tour will be cancelled and all payments made for the tour will be fully refunded.

Participants are strongly advised to arrange travel insurance and insurance for their photography equipment.

Julien Pröpper reserves the right to cancel the tour in the event of extraordinary circumstances such as extreme weather, government restrictions or other situations beyond reasonable control. In such cases, all tour payments will be refunded.
